Dáil Éireann - Volume 30 - 31 May, 1929

Private Deputies Business. - Oireachtas (Payment of Members) (No. 2) Bill, 1929.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: Would the Minister move that the order for the Oireachtas (Payment [759] of Members) (No. 2) Bill be discharged and that the Bill be set down for a later date?

Professor Thrift: Perhaps you could give the House some information as to what has happened about the Committee that was appointed to consider this matter? As a member of the Committee I have never got notice to attend a meeting. If the Committee is not to sit I propose that we proceed with the Second Reading of the Bill at the earliest possible date.

Mr. Flinn: Wait until after the by-election.

Professor Thrift: If the Committee is not to sit I suggest that the [760] matter be put down for Private Members' time next week.

An Leas-Cheann Comhairle: I understand that there was some difficulty about calling the first meeting of the Committee but that it will be called for next week. I take it that it is not the intention to proceed with the Bill until the Committee has reported.

Professor Thrift: If the Committee is going to sit, certainly it is not. I move that the order be discharged and be set down again for next Wednesday week.

Ordered accordingly.

The Dáil adjourned at 1.35 p.m.
