Mr. Lemass asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any information relative to the reported move amongst coal importers to form a “ring” for the purpose of regulating imports of coal and forcing up prices; if he is aware that any such move would not be in the public interests, and whether he proposes to acquire powers to deal with such situation should it arise.

Mr. McGilligan: I am aware that at the instance of British colliery proprietors there have been discussions with coal merchants in the Saorstát relating to future selling arrangements for coal. So far as the Saorstát is concerned I have no evidence of any concerted action by the merchants to the prejudice of the public, but the situation is being closely watched.
