Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Advertisements.

Mr. Cassidy asked the Minister for Finance whether he will furnish a return showing (1) the total expenditure incurred during the year 1928-29 on Government advertisements inserted in newspapers and other periodicals; (2) the names of the newspapers and periodicals in which such advertisements appeared; and (3) the total sum paid in respect of each such newspaper and periodical for the said year.

Minister for Defence (Mr. Desmond Fitzgerald) (for Minister for Finance): The figure for total expenditure during the last financial year was £8,754 17s. 1d. As the other information asked for by the Deputy involves a large amount of detail, I propose to circulate it with the official Report.

Amounts of advertisements inserted in Press 1st April, 1928, to 31st March, 1929:—

Mr. Cassidy: Would the Minister explain the system adopted in selecting particular newspapers which get Government advertisements?

Mr. Fitzgerald: Just a businesslike arrangement on value.

Mr. Cassidy: Is the circulation of the newspaper of the political outlook of the newspaper taken into consideration?

Mr. Fitzgerald: All relevant circumstances.

Mr. G. Boland: Particularly the political outlook.

Mr. Cassidy: I am afraid the Minister cannot give a definite answer to that. He does not want to.

Mr. Fitzgerald: It is a very comprehensive answer.
