TOMÁS MacARTÚIR asked the Minister for Defence if he will state what award has been granted to Mrs. Ellen Dolan, of Derrada, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim, in respect of her son, James Dolan, of the National Army, who was shot in Drumshambo Barracks during a raid by Irregulars.

The PRESIDENT: A gratuity of £25 was paid to Mrs. Mary Dolan on the 11th instant in respect of the death of her son, James Dolan.

Mr. CARTER: Will the President reconsider that and see if something more could not be given, as she is a very poor woman?

[2766] The PRESIDENT: Well, I am informed that Mrs. Dolan, not having been wholly dependent on her son, a pension does not issue. The gratuity was assessed owing to the necessitous circumstances of the case. I should say that the method of assessment is on a basis of dependency, or partial dependency, and to that extent it is limited by reason of the maximum which is granted. I will undertake to look into the matter.
